BELLE PLAINE — Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab must release the names of people who cast provisional ballots in the 2018 general election, including whether their votes were counted, a Kansas judge ruled, handing a victory to a group that wants to expand voting rights.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas on Tuesday called the court’s decision a "resounding rebuke" to Schwab’s office and a win for all Kansas voters.

Political campaigns are competing against a pandemic for Kansans’ attention. So, heads up: There’s a big primary election on the horizon.

A global pandemic and protests over police brutality have helped shape the message and direction of the crowded Republican primary in Kansas’ 3rd Congressional District.

While the five candidates are still talking about issues like health care and the national debt, they’re also now fielding questions about the role of the federal government in a public health crisis and their support for law enforcement.

TOPEKA — Retiring Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts declared his support Tuesday for Rep. Roger Marshall as his replacement, the latest signal that the Republican establishment is determined to push Marshall past polarizing conservative Kris Kobach in the GOP primary.

Roberts' endorsement came in a string of tweets two weeks before the Aug. 4 primary. The four-term senator praised Marshall without mentioning Kobach, the former Kansas secretary of state who lost the 2018 governor's race to Democrat Laura Kelly.

LAWRENCE, Kansas — The dynamics of U.S. Rep. Steve Watkins’ run for re-election continue to shift in the wake of felony charges filed last week after he listed a UPS storefront in Topeka as his address on a voter registration form.

High-profile endorsements quickly gravitated to his top challenger in the Republican primary, Kansas Treasurer Jake LaTurner.

TOPEKA, Kansas — Kris Kobach, a lightning rod throughout his political career, finds himself at the center of a Republican primary battle for the U.S. Senate. That includes independent groups spending millions on ads for and against him.

TOPEKA — U.S. Rep. Ron Estes of Wichita has endorsed state treasurer Jake LaTurner over incumbent Steve Watkins in the 2nd District congressional race.

Estes cited the three felony charges and one misdemeanor charge filed against Watkins this week. He said Watkins' eastern Kansas seat will be in danger if he wins the GOP primary.

Just weeks before his first primary to defend his congressional seat, U.S. Rep. Steve Watkins is facing multiple charges stemming from him registering to vote using the address of a UPS storefront.

The charges were filed Tuesday before the freshman Republican appeared in a debate with two GOP challengers.

TOPEKA — Establishment Republicans, who’d been coy for months about the GOP primary for Kansas’ open Senate seat, are increasingly putting their thumbs on the scale, hoping to push Rep. Roger Marshall to victory over polarizing conservative Kris Kobach.

A new GOP super-PAC this week launched what it promised will be a $3 million advertising campaign against Kobach with a spot that says he has ties to white supremacists, raising anew an issue that the former Kansas secretary of state has long battled as he advocated tough immigration policies.
