More than 100 people attended a political forum coordinated by the Voter Empowerment Committee at Wichita’s St. Paul AME Church earlier this month. The forum was a chance for voters to hear from all four candidates in the race for Wichita City Council District 1, which includes mostly northeast Wichita but also stretches to areas near Century II, north to Heights High School and south to the Cox Communications building.

The public has two chances this week to weigh in on plans for the redesign of Naftzger Park in downtown Wichita.

The city of Wichita is hosting two public input sessions where residents can discuss plans for the nearly 50-year-old park, located at Douglas and St. Francis.

Early voting began last week at the Sedgwick County election office for the Aug. 1 primary election. Satellite polling places across Sedgwick County will also open later this week.


The City of Wichita is holding a special meeting Thursday night for the public to learn more about the proposed 2018-19 budget.

The nearly $600 million budget includes funding for the first phase of a recent staffing plan for the Wichita Police Department. It also funds five full-time and six part-time positions at the Advanced Learning Library opening next year, and supports a four-year sustainability plan for the city's transit system.

The Wichita City Council will hear more from the public on Tuesday about the decision to turn the closed McAdams pool into a splash pad. It was one of the first questions District 1 candidates addressed during a forum Sunday night.

Advance ballots for the Aug. 1 primary election for city council races around Sedgwick County started going out last week. There will be some changes to how voters will receive and return their ballots.


The Wichita City Council agreed on Tuesday to set a public hearing to discuss Tax Increment Financing for the reconstruction of Naftzger Park downtown.

Office of Urban Development's Mark Elder told the council the preliminary concept design would change Naftzger Park from a Victorian look to a modern, urban park with more use year-round.

According to Elder, the park, located at Douglas and St. Francis, is a gateway to Intrust Bank Arena.

The City of Wichita could consider a tax increase to fund new positions in the Wichita Police Department.

A staffing study out earlier this year recommended a total of 73 new positions for the police force, including patrol officers and support staff.
