TOPEKA — Retiring Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts declared his support Tuesday for Rep. Roger Marshall as his replacement, the latest signal that the Republican establishment is determined to push Marshall past polarizing conservative Kris Kobach in the GOP primary.

Roberts' endorsement came in a string of tweets two weeks before the Aug. 4 primary. The four-term senator praised Marshall without mentioning Kobach, the former Kansas secretary of state who lost the 2018 governor's race to Democrat Laura Kelly.

TOPEKA — Establishment Republicans, who’d been coy for months about the GOP primary for Kansas’ open Senate seat, are increasingly putting their thumbs on the scale, hoping to push Rep. Roger Marshall to victory over polarizing conservative Kris Kobach.

A new GOP super-PAC this week launched what it promised will be a $3 million advertising campaign against Kobach with a spot that says he has ties to white supremacists, raising anew an issue that the former Kansas secretary of state has long battled as he advocated tough immigration policies.

Incumbent Rep. Roger Marshall was re-elected to represent Kansas' 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives.

Marshall cruised to victory over his Democratic opponent Alan LaPolice. He picked up 68 percent of the vote to LaPolice's 32 percent.

Marshall, a physician from Great Bend, entered Congress in 2016 after narrowly defeating three-term Rep. Tim Huelskamp in the primary, as well as LaPolice in the general election.
