Seven people are interested in filling a vacancy on the Wichita City Council next year.

The District 2 Advisory Board will conduct the first round of interviews for the seat at a public forum at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Rockwell Branch Library.

Pete Meitzner is in his second term as the District 2 council member. He resigned last month after he won the election to become the Sedgwick County Commissioner for the 1st District.

Voters in Sedgwick County picked a political newcomer over a two-term commissioner to represent the commission’s 4th District.

Unofficial results from Tuesday’s general election show Democrat Lacey Cruse defeated Republican Richard Ranzau by 8 percent.

This was Lacey Cruse’s first political campaign, and she nailed it. She led the race as soon as early voting results were posted and never trailed. She had a similar outcome in the August primary.

City of Wichita

A two-term Wichita City Council member has entered the race for the 1st District seat on the Sedgwick County Commission.

Pete Meitzner announced his candidacy Tuesday. He says south-central Kansas is in a positive mode, and he wants to keep the momentum going by joining the Sedgwick County Commission.

"There is just this void that I can feel where we can bring Sedgwick County into a more active participation and play a more active role in all the betterment we have been seeing in the community," Meitzner says.

Wichita City Councilman Hopes For Spot In Congress

Jan 12, 2017

Wichita City Councilman Pete Meitzner is the most recent contender for the 4th Congressional District seat, a position currently held by Mike Pompeo, President-elect Donald Trump's nominee to head the CIA.

Meitzner, a Republican, has served on the city council since 2011 and recently started his second four-year term. He says that while on the council he's worked to apply business practices to Wichita's government.

"I'd like to follow the lead, along with the president, about putting some more business applications in the federal government," Meitzner said.
