If Kansas congressman Mike Pompeo is confirmed to the post of CIA director in the Trump administration, it will leave his House seat vacant.

Pompeo was recently re-elected to a fourth term in Congress. He beat out three challengers in the general election--Democrat Dan Giroux, independent Miranda Allen and Libertarian Gordon Bakken--and received 61 percent of the vote.

If the 4th Congressional District seat is vacated, it will be filled by a special election, explains Bryan Caskey, elections director with the Kansas secretary of state’s office.

U.S Representative Mike Pompeo faces another challenger in his re-election bid for Kansas’ 4th Congressional District.

Miranda Allen turned in petitions on Monday morning with more than 9,000 signatures to run as an independent.

Allen is a small business owner from a sixth generation farm family in the southern Kansas City of Kiowa in Barber County.

She ran as a Republican in a state senate race back in 2012 and lost in the primary by a close vote. Allen says she’s taking a different path for her Congressional campaign.

An aviation bill working its way to President Obama will keep an airport weather reporting program in place at Wichita’s Eisenhower National Airport through fiscal year 2017.

The legislation keeps the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) from terminating the Contract Weather Observer (CWO) program at Eisenhower and 56 other mid-size airports until the agency does a thorough review of the issue.

As KMUW’s Deborah Shaar reports, the House Republican decided against making a run for the U.S. Senate.

Legislation that would ensure a safe drinking water supply in south-central Kansas passed the U.S. Senate today.

The legislation extends the authorization of federal funding for the Equus Beds Aquifer Recharge and Recovery Project by 10 years. The aquifer is the primary fresh water source for south-central Kansas and lies under parts of Sedgwick, Harvey, Reno and McPherson Counties.

Republican Congressman Mike Pompeo, from Wichita, is not ruling out a run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by fellow Republican Jerry Moran.

Pompeo blasted the Kansas senator after Moran called for hearings on a Supreme Court nominee, then changed his mind. As KPR’s Stephen Koranda reports, the harsh words fueled talk that Pompeo might challenge Moran.

Moran changed his position on holding hearings after facing criticism. Pompeo called it a “tardy conversion.”
