TOPEKA — Gov. Laura Kelly on Thursday named Lt. Gov. Lynn Rogers as Kansas’ next state treasurer, and he said he hopes to expand state programs designed to help farmers and prospective homeowners obtain low-interest loans.

The Democratic governor cited her 2018 running mate’s nearly 40-year career in banking as a key reason to appoint him treasurer. The office will become vacant Jan. 2, when Republican State Treasurer Jake LaTurner steps down to take the eastern Kansas seat in the U.S. House, which LaTurner won in November.

TOPEKA — U.S. Rep. Ron Estes of Wichita has endorsed state treasurer Jake LaTurner over incumbent Steve Watkins in the 2nd District congressional race.

Estes cited the three felony charges and one misdemeanor charge filed against Watkins this week. He said Watkins' eastern Kansas seat will be in danger if he wins the GOP primary.

Kansas Treasurer Jake LaTurner is ending his campaign for the U.S. Senate and will instead launch a primary challenge against Republican Congressman Steve Watkins.

Former Kansas Republican Gov. Jeff Colyer on Tuesday urged the state treasurer to drop his Senate bid and instead challenge freshman Rep. Steve Watkins in the GOP primary, arguing the move would help “nominate a candidate that can win.”

After Jake LaTurner was appointed State Treasurer, Southeast Kansas Republicans appear to have replaced one conservative with another in the Kansas Senate.

The lawmaker appointed this week to serve the remainder of LaTurner’s term, former Cherokee County Commissioner Richard Hilderbrand, says he doesn’t like political labels. But his views on key budget and tax issues align him with conservatives in the Legislature.

A Republican state senator from Pittsburg will become the next treasurer for Kansas.

Gov. Sam Brownback appointed Jake LaTurner on Tuesday to serve the rest of Ron Estes’ term now that Estes is headed to Congress.

The governor says LaTurner, now 29, became the youngest sitting member of the Kansas Legislature when he was elected five years ago to represent Senate District 13 in the southeast corner of the state.

Before that, LaTurner worked for Republican Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins. He said at a press briefing Tuesday that politics is the family business.
