Election 2020

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas — With about six weeks before the election, you might see Republican Amanda Adkins’ team out knocking on doors in Johnson, Wyandotte or Miami counties. Democratic U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids’ outreach efforts in her re-election bid are virtual.

It’s just one sign of the differences between the two candidates in Kansas’ 3rd Congressional District when it comes to how they say they would respond to economic and health effects of the coronavirus.

TOPEKA, Kansas — It’s little surprise that the candidates for Kansas’ open U.S. Senate seat sharply disagree on taxes, trade, immigration and climate change. What’s unclear is who voters will most agree with in November: Republican U.S. Rep. Roger Marshall or Democratic state Sen. Barbara Bollier.

Bollier, a retired doctor, believes Marshall’s down-the-line support of President Donald Trump has created an opportunity for her to ride anti-Trump sentiment in the state’s population centers to an upset.

Voter registrations are up in Sedgwick County, with six weeks to go until Election Day.

The Sedgwick County Election Office says more than 312,000 people are registered to vote in the general election. That’s up about 8,000 since the August primary, and about 18,000 since 2016, the last presidential election.

A panel of Sedgwick County leaders dismissed an effort to remove a Democratic candidate from a Sedgwick County Commission race.

The panel of three officials ruled Monday that Sarah Lopez will remain on the ballot for the 2nd District county commission seat. She is running against Republican Michael O’Donnell, who is seeking a second term.

Former O’Donnell campaign worker John Whitmer, a Republican, filed an objection with the county election office last week questioning whether Lopez lived in the 2nd District.

Sedgwick County plans to install more than a dozen ballot drop boxes ahead of the November general election.

The drop boxes will be placed strategically in cities around Sedgwick County as a convenient option for voters to return their advance mail ballot.

Election Commissioner Tabitha Lehman says the boxes are part of COVID-19-related safety precautions for elections. She says the boxes will also help ease voter concerns about postmarks and an overwhelmed postal service.

TOPEKA, Kansas — A near sweep by conservatives over moderates in several primary races this week sets up more conflict over the next two years between the Republican-led Legislature and Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly.

“There will be a lot of feuding and fighting going on, particularly given the COVID situation,” said Rep. Tom Phillips, a moderate Republican from Manhattan who isn’t seeking a fifth term.

Republican leaders could further limit Kelly’s power to guide the state’s response to the pandemic and power past her objections to reducing corporate taxes.

Patrick Penn easily defeated incumbent Michael Capps in the Republican primary for the District 85 seat in the Kansas House.

Penn captured more than 76% of the vote.

"We are elated right now," Penn said after early results showed him in the lead. "This is some of the best news I’ve ever seen."

The former Army veteran was backed by the Republican Party against Capps, who is serving his first full term.
