Sedgwick County held an oath of office ceremony on Sunday for two commissioners who are beginning their new terms.  

Commissioner David Dennis is serving a second term representing the 3rd District. Sarah Lopez begins a new career in public service representing the 2nd District.

Hunter Larkin says he decided to run for the Sedgwick County commission in January, when Commissioner David Dennis voted to appoint the board’s lone Democrat, Lacey Cruse, as vice chair.

Dennis joined one of his Republican colleagues in that vote, but Larkin says the decision was enough to make him question Dennis’ conservative principles.

Primaries will be held in August for both seats on the Sedgwick County Commission up for election this year.

Voters will decide Republican primaries on Aug. 4 and contested races in November.

Current commissioners Michael O’Donnell and David Dennis are running for second terms. The two Republicans were both elected in 2016.

Improvement Project To Begin Next Year For I-235 In Wichita

Gov. Jeff Colyer announced a new $65 million project Tuesday to improve a section of I-235 stretching over the Little Arkansas River in Wichita.

The project will replace bridges in poor condition, add auxiliary lanes and improve the interchange ramp at Broadway.

"Investing in the modernization of our transportation network here in Sedgwick County really improves our local quality of life," Colyer said near the interchange. "It is important for economic development."
