In 2016, a monument honoring both Union and Confederate Civil War veterans was erected in Wichita's Veterans Memorial Park.

The Reconciliation Memorial replaced a Confederate flag that was taken down the year before following a deadly shooting at an African Methodist Episcopal church in South Carolina.

When Christopher Justice got a text message from a friend earlier this summer, he didn't know what it meant: "You're Twitter famous."

Justice had just graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School, and he was spending an uneventful few months working at a pizza place before heading off to college at Wichita State University. He didn't even have a Twitter account.

Students returned to Wichita State University for the fall semester this week. The university begins the new term with two weeks of special programs and events.

As KMUW’s Deborah Shaar reports, one campus event features a speaker known for being an agent of change.

The main event of WSU’s “Welcomefest” will be Tuesday evening, when artist and activist Bree Newsome delivers a keynote speech titled "Tearing Hate from the Sky."

A Kansas student's display of a Confederate flag from the back of his pickup truck has sparked debate about race at a high school named Free State in a nod to Kansas' anti-slavery history.

The student displayed the flag last month on the grounds of the largely white school in the university city of Lawrence. Administrators told him to remove it, and they've banned such flags from the grounds as disruptions. The district says the student won't be disciplined, and that the situation is being used as a learning moment.
