The final Monday of every month, we present Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival, a monthly concert series showcasing top world music artists and groups who have appeared at the prestigious annual festival that takes place each spring in Savannah, Georgia.
This time, in conjunction with the January Best of 2019 feature, we present Ranky Tanky. The band draws on the rich musical traditions of the Gullah communities of the sea islands and southern coast of the U.S., performing traditional lullabies, songs, children’s games and more with touches of jazz and soul and boundless energy and charm. Their debut album hit number one on several charts and their 2019 release has been nominated for a Grammy.
Tuesday, January 28
This time in the Global Village we journey to the Indian Ocean islands of Madagascar, Zanzibar, Seychelles, Comoros, and more. We’ll hear from the Culture Musical Club of Zanzibar (with special guest Taj Mahal), Réunion’s Claude Vihn-San, Madagascar’s Zeze, the Seychelles All Stars and, from Comoros, multi-instrumentalist and singer Nawal.
Wednesday, January 29
With word coming last week of the passing of Brazilian trumpeter Claudio Roditi, Global Village pays tribute to him in this special edition of the show devoted to his work. We’ll hear him as a leader and also as a special guest with Brazil’s Trio da Paz, harmonica player Hendrik Meurkens, Cuban saxophonist Paquito d’Rivera, and with Nova Bossa Nova in a tribute to John Coltrane.
Thursday, January 30
Global Village marks the birthday of Ahmed Abdul-Malik. He worked with such legends as John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and Art Blakey, but we focus here on his pioneering work as an oud player and artist who incorporated African, Caribbean and Arabic influences into his work. And as the January Best of 2019 feature continues, Global Village also remembers Malian singer Sali Sadibe, who passed away last year, the award winning duo of kora player Seckou Keita and harpist Catrin Finch, and show favorites Kaja, Adir Jan, and Dizzy Mandjeku with Ale Kuma.

Global Village wraps up the January Best of 2019 feature with a special rebroadcast of our countdown of the show’s Top Ten world music favorites of the past year. There were some surprising trends and unusual discoveries in 2019 and they’re reflected in the Global Village favorites of the year.
