Women Of Chess Records + Shirley Scott's Birthday & New Releases

Friday, March 12, and Sunday, March 14

In conjunction with the March Women’s History Month feature and in honor of Leonard Chess’s birthday, Crossroads features the Women of Chess Records. We’ll hear selections from Koko Taylor, Etta James, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Laura Lee and Fontella Bass – all of whom had major hits on Chess or its subsidiaries, along with rare tracks that Memphis Minnie and Irma Thomas did for the label. And in hour two, it’s a special concert and interview with the late, great “Queen of the Blues,” Koko Taylor.

Crossroads also marks the birthday of soul-jazz organ great Shirley Scott, and showcases the latest releases from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Joyann Parker, and Nora Jean Wallace.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
