The Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum is celebrating two special birthdays on Saturday, July 23. The City of Wichita turned 146 years old on Thursday, and the city’s original City Hall, which is now home to the museum, is 126 years old.

To celebrate both events, the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum is hosting a birthday party from 1 to 4 p.m. The museum is located at 204 South Main Street in Wichita.

Wichita was officially born on July 21, 1870. The cornerstone for the original City Hall was laid twenty years later on July 4, 1890. A time capsule placed beneath the cornerstone was opened 100 years later in celebration of the building’s Centennial anniversary. The contents are now on temporary exhibit.

At the birthday celebration, there will be special tours of the museum, which has exhibits highlighting the city’s entrepreneurial history and several recreations of what Wichita was like through the years. There will also be crafts, refreshments and birthday cake, which will be served in Heritage Square.

Admission is free to individuals and small groups who bring a birthday card.
