After the success of 1969’s rock opera Tommy, The Who’s Pete Townshend set about creating another broad-reaching collection of songs titled Lifehouse. He eventually abandoned that project in favor of a more conventional Who project, titled Who’s Next. The album features “Behind Blue Eyes,” “Bargain” and “Baba O’ Reily” (often misidentified as “Teenage Wasteland”). We’ll hear selections from that release as well as from Townshend’s 1972 solo debut, Who Came First.

Released in December 1967 The Who Sell Out was inspired by the then-burgeoning pirate radio movement as well as Radio London, linking a series of unrelated song with faux commercials. Listen for music from that release as a well as Petra Haden’s 2005 cover of the record, Petra Haden Sings The Who Sell Out.

Es De Fantasia is the new Spanish-language release from Kansas singer-songwriter MariaElena. We’ll hear selections from that as well from La Pistola y El Corozon, the 1988 album from Los Lobos, featuring the Los Angeles outfit’s salute to Tejano and Mariachi music.
Thursday, December 12
Released in 1969, Hot Rats was the second solo album from Frank Zappa. The record found Zappa exploring a jazz-oriented sound with musicians Jean Luc Ponty, Sugarcane Harris, Shuggie Otis, and Captain Beefheart. The album is the subject of an upcoming boxed set, The Hot Rats Sessions. We’ll hear music from the original album as well as songs from the latest by Miki Moondrops Fuwa Fuwa Music.

UnPOPular is the latest EP from J Hacha De Zola, including a cover of Billie Ellish’s “Bury A Friend.” Listen for music from that as well as music from the Elk City’s Souls in Space.
Saturday, December 14
Who is the latest release from The Who and the band’s first studio release since 2006. We’ll hear music from that recording plus songs from The Cure’s 2000 album Bloodflowers.
