Patricia Houston works at the Wichita State Community Engagement Institute. She and her husband recently missed their 36-year anniversary trip, but they got the next best thing.
"My husband is the pastor of Mount Olive Tabernacle of Praise. And we have not taken a vacation probably in the last five years. And so we were looking forward to going to Cozumel. And then we were hit by the COVID pandemic and travel was restricted and we could not go. And so we were kind of melancholy about not being able to get away.
"And all of a sudden we got a text with a picture from a couple of ladies from our church. And they had set up at their home outside there, 'cuz you know we’re social distancing… They put together a picture that had lounge chairs, and a little TV, and knickknacks around it. And just wanted us to know that they appreciated us as we took a staycation and missed our Mexican getaway.
"What tickled us about it the most was that they took the time to write the sign that said, 'Welcome to Cozumel,' that they had really in great detail created a setting for us. So it really made a great visual, and we were texting them back and forth: 'We can feel the sand in our toes,' and, 'I wonder what’s in that cup, was it a nice coconut-pineapple, refreshing drink?'
"So it was just nice of them to think of us, and I think a lot of people are doing that during this time, and I think that’s what makes us human."
