In honor of Veterans Day, Night Train steps aside to present two exciting performances from the premier jazz ensemble of the Air Force, the Airmen of Note. In hour one, we’ll hear them with trumpet legend Bobby Shew, and in hour two, their special guest is saxophone legend Walt Weiskopf. Shew, a veteran himself, has appeared with acclaimed big bands led by Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Toshiko Akiyoshi and more. Weiskopf also worked with Rich and Akiyoshi, was a member of Steely Dan, and is also a highly regarded jazz educator.

Night Train marks birthdays of drummer Idris Muhammad, singer Blue Lu Barker, Kansas City band leader Benny Moten, and pianist Hampton Hawes; continues the November jazz organ feature with music from Charles Earland and Chris Hazelton’s Boogaloo 7; pays tribute throughout the week to trumpeter Roy Hargrove; previews concerts for the coming week; and in hour two features a special on West Coast pianist – including birthday artist Hampton Hawes, along with Dave Brubeck and Nat ‘King’ Cole.

Night Train continues its week-long tribute to master trumpeter Roy Hargrove, who passed away earlier this month, along with more jazz organ sounds for the November feature, concert previews, and birthday salutes to pianists George Cables and Ellis Marsalis (who will be featured in a special in hour two of the show).
Thursday 11.15.18
Night Train wraps up a week-long tribute to Roy Hargrove with music from his now-out-of-print debut ablum, as a guest with Jimmy Smith, and from his classic Latin jazz set, Habana. The show is also celebrating the centennial birthday of Wild Bill Davis this month and we’ll hear him in some different settings with work he did with Count Basie, Gloria Lynne, Lionel Hampton, and Louis Jordan. Plus new music from Ben Paterson and Richie Cole and in hour two, in conjunction with jazz organ feature, a special devoted to three great soul jazz organists – Jimmy Smith, Shirley Scott and Baby Face Willette.
