Tadd Dameron, Chick Webb, Ethan Iverson, Jazz Tributes And Afro-Cuban Jazz

Monday, February 10

Night Train marks birthdays of Brazilian pianist and composer Antonio Adolfo, pianist Sir Roland Hanna, and bandleader Chick Webb (including music from Ella Fitzgerald with his band and featured in an hour two special). Plus music from February featured artist Tadd Dameron, local and regional concert previews, and new albums from Mark Winkler, the Alex Levin Trio, the Diva Jazz Orchestra, and Aaron Diehl.

Tuesday, February 11

Night Train marks birthdays of two artists who began their careers working in jazz rock fusion and later moved more toward mainstream jazz. We’ll hear selections from both violinist Didier Lockwood and also pianist and composer Ethan Iverson, former member of the Bad Plus (with music he did with his own Quartet and with Billy Hart in hour one, and a Bad Plus special in hour two, featuring music from their latest release, and past albums that included Iverson). Also new music from Aaron Diehl and the group Out to Dinner, and from February featured artist Tadd Dameron.

Wednesday, February 12

Night Train highlights tributes and covers tonight – including compositions from Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderley, Frank Foster, Chick Corea, Mose Allison, and February featured artist Tadd Dameron as performed by Taj Mahal, Allan Harris, Tim Hegarty, Doug MacDonald, Maria Muldaur, Joe Farrell, and more.

Thursday, February 13

It’s Afro-Cuban Jaz tonight on the Night Train – including the standard “Cubano Chant” and music from Kenny Dorham’s classic album, Afro-Cuban, along with selections from Cuban jazz artists Alfredo Rodriguez, Ignacio Berroa, Paquito D’Rivera, and Harold Lopez-Nussa. We’ll also hear from Dianne Reeves, Pat Metheny, the Fred Hersch Trio, Kurt Elling, Lynne Arriale, and the late Brazilian trumpeter Claudio Roditi.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
