Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did more than inspire and lead. He changed America using his skills to leverage the media, politicians and grassroots organizers to get civil rights legislation passed.

Here’s Adam Serwer, writing recently about Dr. King’s writing in The Atlantic

In his “Letter From Birmingham Jail,” Martin Luther King Jr. famously lamented the “white moderate” who “prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice.” He also acknowledged the importance of tension to achieving justice. “I have earnestly opposed violent tension,” King wrote, “but there is a type of constructive, nonviolent tension which is necessary for growth.” Americans should not fear that form of tension. They should fear its absence.

We explore Dr. King’s strategies and those being used today by activists.

In collaboration with WNYC, we hear a live gathering of journalists, change-makers, and artists, recorded at the Apollo Theater. WQXR’s Terrance McKnight introduces the show, which is co-hosted by WNYC’s Jami Floyd and Alison Stewart.
