Night Train marks Earth Day with music from 2019 NEA Jazz Master Maria Schneider and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, marks birthdays of trumpeter Tommy Turrentine (brother of April featured artist, Stanley Turrentine), bassist Paul Chambers (including music he did with Tommy Turrentine), and legendary bassist and composer Charles Mingus (including a Mingus special in hour two of the show), and highlights new music from former Turrentine sideman Dave Stryker and the Cory Weeds Quintet.

A soul jazz extravaganza tonight on the Night Train – including music from April featured artist Stanley Turrentine as a leader on one of his classic Blue Note albums, and as a guest with organists Shirley Scott and Jimmy Smith. Also new soul jazz sounds from Tony Monaco, the Chicago Soul Jazz Collective, Pat Bianchi, JV’s Boogaloo Squad, and the Soul Message Band, along with classic sounds from Gene Ammons, Rusty Bryant and more.

Night Train highlights music April featured artist Stanley Turrentine did with soul jazz organ great Jimmy Smith. And there’s music from two other tenor saxophonists born on this date - Johnny Griffin and Joe Henderson (including a special focusing on Henderson’s classic Blue Note work in hour two of the show). Plus regional concert previews and new music from Caesar Frazier, Akira Tana, and Vanessa Rubin.

Night Train marks the birthdays of drummer Carl Allen, tenor saxophonist Willis ‘Gatortail’ Jackson, and legendary singer Ella Fitzgerald. We’ll hear Ella doing a Billie Holiday song along with another Billie classic performed by April featured artist Stanley Turrentine in hour one, and in hour two, it’s a special about Billie and Ella. Also on tap – new releases featuring singer Etta Jones, guitarist Ron Jackson, drummer Herlin Riley, and guitarist Bill Frisell with bassist Thomas Morgan.
