SPECIAL: Taj Mahal's Birthday

KMUW Music is celebrating Taj Mahal's birthday on Thursday, May 17. Tune in to Global Village and Strange Currency from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. for three hours of music. 

Global Village gets the celebration underway by exploring the world music side of Taj Mahal's work from throughout his career. Along with his classic blues and roots music, Taj Mahal has been a pioneer in exploring the connections between blues and Caribbean, African, and Hawaiian music and has worked with a number of world artists including kora player Toumani Diabate, Malian guitar great Ali Farka Toure, and on the Red Hot + Riot tribute to Afrobeat legend Fela.

Strange Currency continues the Taj Mahal feature for another two hours. Listen for music from his collaboration with Keb' Mo', TajMo.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
Jedd Beaudoin is host/producer of the nationally syndicated program Strange Currency. He has also served as an arts reporter, a producer of A Musical Life and a founding member of the KMUW Movie Club. As a music journalist, his work has appeared in Pop Matters, Vox, No Depression and Keyboard Magazine.
