Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt and the Kansas Sunshine Coalition for Open Government will host seminars on Kansas open government laws across the state this month.

“As our office investigates complaints of violations of open government laws, most often we find the violations were inadvertent and can be avoided through better education,” Schmidt said in a news release.

One session is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 23, at Wichita State University. It will run from 9 a.m. until noon at the Marcus Welcome Center, 1845 Fairmount.

The training sessions are free and open to the public. People can attend by registering at www.ag.ks.gov/open-gov or by calling 785-296-2215.

Attorneys with the Kansas Attorney General’s office will conduct sessions covering the Kansas Open Records Act and the Kansas Open Meetings Act. A panel discussion of open government will include Sunshine Coalition members, local government officials and media representatives.

Three other sessions have been scheduled with additional sessions being planned for Topeka and Johnson County.

The other sessions are:

  • Colby: Aug. 21, 1:30–4:30 p.m., Colby High School Auditorium 1890 S. Franklin
  • Garden City: Aug. 22, 9 a.m.–noon, Finney County Public Library, 605 E. Walnut
  • Fredonia: Aug. 24, 1:30 p.m–4:30 p.m., Fredonia Public Library, 807 Jefferson
