Sedgwick County Commissioners O'Donnell, Dennis Face Challengers In Re-election Bids

sedgwickcounty.org
Sedgwick Coutny commissioners Michael O'Donnell, left, and David Dennis are facing challengers in their respective Republican primaries.

Primaries will be held in August for both seats on the Sedgwick County Commission up for election this year.

Voters will decide Republican primaries on Aug. 4 and contested races in November.

Current commissioners Michael O’Donnell and David Dennis are running for second terms. The two Republicans were both elected in 2016.

O’Donnell represents the county’s 2nd District, which covers the southwest portion of Sedgwick County including west Wichita, Clearwater and Haysville. Before joining the county commission, he was elected to Wichita City Council and the Kansas Senate.

O'Donnell faces challenges from Cindy Miles and Kathleen Garrison in the Republican primary.

Miles is the executive director of the Nonprofit Chamber of Service and served as a community advocate in various roles for more than 20 years.

Garrison is a small business owner who also has experience as a data analyst with the Department of Justice and a court reporter for the 18th Judicial District.

The winner of the 2nd District primary race will face Democrat Sarah Lopez in the November general election. Lopez is a regional health care tech leader and administrator for Ascension Health.

Dennis represents the 3rd District, which covers the northwest portion of Sedgwick County including Mount Hope, Goddard and Cheney. He retired from careers in the U.S. Air Force and teaching before serving on the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission and State Board of Education.

Dennis faces a challenge from Hunter Larkin in the primary. Larkin was elected to Goddard City Council last year and entered the Sedgwick County Commission race in January.

The winner of this race will face Democrat Mike Iuen in November. Iuen retired in 2016 after a 35-year career at a Wichita TV station where he worked as a news anchor, reporter and producer.

Other Sedgwick County races on the ballot are for district court judge, clerk, treasurer, register of deeds, sheriff and district attorney.

The only contested races are for county clerk and treasurer.

A Republican primary will be held for the treasurer position with candidates Ben Sauceda and Brandi Baily. The winner will face Democrat Charity Kennedy in November. Current treasurer Linda Kizzire is not running for re-election.

Current county clerk Republican Kelly Arnold will face Democrat Kelli Reid in the November general election.

Monday was the deadline to file as a candidate in this year’s election cycle. The primary election is Aug. 4. The general election is Nov. 3.
