The final Monday of every month, it’s Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival, a monthly concert series showcasing top world music artists and groups who have appeared at the prestigious annual event that takes place each spring in Savannah, Georgia.
This time, in conjunction with the September Cuban Music Feature, it’s Canadian-Cuban singer, composer, and percussionist Adonis Puentes & the Voice of Cuba Orchestra. Born and raised in Cuba where he began playing at the age of six and soaking up the rich traditional forms of Cuban music, Puentes has matured into a powerful artist in his own right, crafting what he describes as “fusion with Cuban roots.” His Savannah debut headlined the Festival’s Latin Dance Party and offered a non-stop mix of lively originals and well-known and loved Afro-Cuban classics.
Tuesday, October 1
Global Village celebrates the birthday of one of Senegal’s greatest stars and one of the giants of world music – Youssou N’Dour. The program highlights music from his early work with Etoile de Dakar, music recorded on his breakthough tour with Peter Gabriel, and his Grammy-winning Egypt album – along with guest appearances he made with Orchestra Baobab, Harry Belafonte, Carlou D, and more.
Wednesday, October 2
Global Village celebrates Gandhi Day (a national holiday in India and also the UN-designated International Day of Non-Violence) with a wide array of music from India. Highlights include music from Ravi Shankar, his daughter Anoushka Shankar, guitarist Prasanna (who also was born on this date), the Jaipur Kawa Brass Band, the Soul March release commemorating Gandhi’s Salt March, and Indian-jazz fusion from Vijay Iyer and the Taal Tantra Experience.
Thursday October 3
Global Village celebrates German Unity Day, a national holiday in Germany marking the 1990 reunification of then East and West Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Featured are a number of German world bands, including the pioneering group Dissidenten, prog rock and world band Can, German reggae artist Jahcoustix, Berlin’s 17 Hippies, Köln’s Schäl Sick Brass Band, and the full, original version of Kraftwerk’s iconic “Autobahn.”

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of recently released and forthcoming world music albums.
