The final Monday of every month, we present Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival, a monthly concert series showcasing top world music artists and groups who have appeared at the prestigious annual festival that takes place each spring in Savannah, Georgia.
This time, it’s a performance from Richard Thompson. A founding member of the pioneering English folk rock group, Fairport Convention, guitar hero, and powerful songwriter, Thompson has increasingly focused in recent years on live performance, crafting unique, witty, moving and one-of-a-kind concerts, including this one from the Savannah Music Festival.
Tuesday, October 29
Global Village goes to Togo for music that rarely gets featured in world music releases. Still, a few compilations, including the Togo Soul 70 and Afro-Beat Airways sets, have offered a tantalizing glimpse into the lively sounds from that African nation. Also this time, we’ll hear music from the legendary Congolese rumba band L’Orchestra Afrisa International, a Spanish Afrobeat group Ogun Afrobeat, and some ska and reggae from the Skatalites and Third World, respectively.
Wednesday, October 30
Global Village celebrates the birthday of Latin Soul Jazz percussionist Poncho Sanchez with music from across his career. We’ll hear some of his early work with West Coast Latin jazz pioneer Cal Tjader, guest appearances with the Caribbean Jazz Project and Dr. John, and music from albums he did as a leader including his Grammy-winning release Latin Soul.

Things are about to get a bit scary in the Global Village. Join us for the annual Global Village Halloween special for lots of ghoulish global sounds.
Friday, November 1
It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of recently released and forthcoming world music albums.
Among the highlights this time:
- Legendary Congolese Rumba star Wuta Mayi
- Canadian-Colombia artist Roberto Lopez
- Haitian group Lakou Mizik with a number of New Orleans stars
- Music of Mali from Mah Damba, Habib Koite, and Invisible System
- A new compilation of Funana music from Cape Verde
- Udu with their melding of Buryat and Lithuanian influences
- And Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and other influences blend in new titles from both Nawaris and Ombra.
