At Savannah, Celebrating Cesaria & Wrapping Up Renbourn

Monday, August 26

The final Monday of every month, it’s Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival, a monthly concert series showcasing top world music artists and groups who have appeared at the prestigious annual event that takes place each spring in Savannah, Georgia.

This time, in conjunction with the August John Renbourn/Folk Feature, it’s Sam Reider & the Human Hands, an impressive new group that creates a distinctive sound drawing on folk, bluegrass, Americana, jazz and world music. The show captured the band’s debut at the Savannah Music Festival.

Tuesday, August 27

Global Village celebrates the birthday of one of the greats of Cape Verdan music, Cesaria Evora. In this special edition of the show, we’ll hear some of her earliest recordings, along with classic tracks, rare guest appearances, some of the artists with whom she worked, and some artists who claim her as an influence.

Wednesday, August 28

Global Village marks birthdays of Joseph Shabalala of Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Jamaican singer Beres Hammond; continues with more music from John Renbourn – with Pentangle and the John Renbourn Group; and highlights new releases from Japan’s Minyo Crusaders, Madagascar’s Damily and more.

Thursday, August 29

Throughout the month Global Village has been featuring music of English guitarist John Renbourn. But this time we turn to Brazilian guitarists, including Baden Powell, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Romero Lubambo, Vinicius Cantuaria (with Bill Frisell) and Chico Pinheiro. We’ll also hear music from Portuguese cavaquinho player Julio Pereira, Indian world-jazz percussionist Sameer Gupta, and world folk jazz group, the Modus Quartet. And we’ll sneak in a bit of English folk rock with the help of John Martyn.

Friday, August 30

It’s ‘Global Village Unplugged’ as the show highlights a wide array of acoustic artists and styles this time. We’ll hear music from Rhiannon Giddens, Mali’s Habib Koite, the Colombian band Cimarron, Italian mandolinist and singer Mimmo Epifani, Palestinian oud group Le Trio Joubran, and as we wrap up the August feature, John Renbourn with Pentangle and with guitarist Stefan Grossman.
