Monday, Feb. 17 2014: We team up with Global Village and Night Train for a Presidents’ Day special featuring selections from some politically active musicians, including Joe Walsh, Frank Zappa, Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys, and others, plus some quasi-political musings from Little Feat, Ian Hunter, and selections from Of Great and Mortal Men: 43 Songs For 43 U.S. Presidencies.
Tuesday, Feb. 18 2014: We present a Currency Exchange performance from Mike Coykendall. The Kansas-born musician was a founding member of the Wichita band Klyde Konnor and has, in recent years, recorded and toured with M. Ward and She & Him.
Wednesday, Feb. 19 2014: We continue our month-long salute to The Beatles with a listen to some solo selections by John, Paul, George and Ringo on this evening’s show, including selections from Paul McCartney’s 1982 release, Tug of War, featuring a collaboration with Stevie Wonder.
Thursday, Feb. 20 2014: The Lights From The Chemical Plant is the sophomore release by singer-songwriter Robert Ellis and a record that Rolling Stone called “stylistically ambiguous,” draw from a wide range of influences including traditional country music, jazz fusion, and the work of Paul Simon. We’ll hear selections from this unique new recording as well as from I Want To Be An Astronaut, the latest release by singer-songwriter Greg Laswell, a recording that finds him revisiting some of the most beloved songs of his career.
Friday, Feb. 21 2014: You Should Be So Lucky is the brand new album from Benmont Tench. With nearly 40 years as a recording artist behind him, Tench is one of the most revered names in American music, having spent much of his life as a member of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. But he’s also recorded with The Jayhawks, John Prine, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash. This new record finds him focusing on his own compositions with a little help from friends David Rawlings and Gillian Welch, Tom Petty, and Ringo Starr. We’ll hear from this record and from Dizzy Heights, the latest release from Neil Finn, the New Zealand native known for his work with the bands Crowded House and Split Enz.
Saturday, Feb. 22 2014: We’ll hear from the powerful new recording by Kentucky-raised singer-songwriter Dawn Landes. Called Bluebird, the record has been receiving impressive critical acclaim that is likely to see Landes find a wider audience in 2014, plus Burn Your Fire For No Witness, the latest by Angel Olsen.
