Roma Music, Al DiMeola, The Queen of Fado, Tunisia Republic Day & Remembering Yomo Toro

Monday, July 22

Global Village highlights the world music side of jazz fusion guitarist Al DiMeola for his birthday. Plus more Roma music for the July feature from the Gitano Family; the latest from Santana, Rhiannon Giddens, and the Vampires; and recently named NEA Heritage Fellow Balla Kouyate with Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road Ensemble.

Tuesday, July 23

Music in the Global Village from the Queen of Fado, Amalia Rodrigues, and adventurous Indian violinist L. Subramaniam, both born on this date – plus Romania Roma band Fanfare Ciocarlia (featured next week for the July edition of the Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival monthly concert series), accordion master David Munnelly, and eclectic Australian ensemble Equus.

Wednesday, July 24

Global Village heads to Hungary for some traditional and contemporary sounds, including the sounds of the Hungarian tambura, violin and cimbalom. We’ll hear new music from Söndörg? and the Cimbalom Brothers, and, in conjunction with the July feature, the show will showcase a number of Roma musicians and bands, including Romano Drom (from their new 20th anniversary album), Roby Lakatos, Bela Lakatos & the Gypsy Youth Project, Kalman Balogh and more.

Thursday, July 25

Global Village marks Tunisian Republic Day, a national holiday in Tunisia, with a wide array of artists and styles of music from that country, from Louisa the Tunisian, a popular artist during and after World War II across North Africa and in France, through cross-cultural and contemporary artists including Anouar Brahem, Amine & Hamza, Bargou 08, DuOud, and Eurovision Song Contest Winner Amina.

Friday, July 26

Today marks the birthday of cuatro player and salsa great Yomo Toro. Global Village pays tribute to him in a special edition of the show that features music spanning his seven decade long career - including both albums under his own name and recordings he did with the Fania All Stars, Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe, Roswell Rudd, Daniel Ponce, David Byrne, and Ned Sublette.
