Well, we’ve had some snow this winter. That proves there’s no global warming. No, really. Fox News has been all over it. See, they took Al Gore’s book, “An Inconvenient Truth,” and they set it outside in the snow and showed it on camera while they snickered and cackled about how the snow disproved it all.
Yeah. That’s what we’ve come to. Imbecilic “news reports” like that. The “gotcha” mentality rules stronger than ever.
Because it snows, according to this line of reasoning, the overwhelming majority of the scientific community are idiots. So how about this: Because it’s cloudy the sun will never shine again. Because the grass is brown, it’ll never be green. Because…well, you get the picture.
Of course, people watch Fox News because they agree with it. I don’t watch it because I don’t agree with it. I read certain online sites because I do agree with them. Inch by inch we gravitate to opposite sides of the political seesaw. And when both sides get enough weight on them, the board snaps in the middle and both sides crash to the ground.
I’m not smart enough to know if we’ll come to that. But it’s felt like we’re heading that way ever since the Newt Gingrich era and his famous government shutdown of 15 years ago.
One thing I know: In the race toward extreme political polarity, Fox News is shoving us hard toward opposite sides. When and if this seesaw breaks, we’ll see whether the ground we hit is covered with snow or it’s a sun-parched desert.
And whether Al Gore’s book is buried beneath a dune of blistering sand or a mound of fluffy snow.
While we remain “One nation under ‘gotcha.’”
