Global Village marks birthdays of cellist Yo-Yo Ma (from some of his world music projects) and Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez (from two of his Quincy Jones-produced albums); highlights music from three releases newly nominated for Latin Grammys from Eddie Palmieri, Chucho Valdes, and Cimarron; continues the October Turkish Psychedelic Folk Rock feature with music from a top new release in the genre from Umut Adan; and remembers Egyptian percussionist Hossam Ramzy in a guest appearance with the Gipsy Kings.

This time in the Global Village, it’s legendary songs and artists from Africa, including a variety of styles from Nigeria, South Africa, Mali, and more. Among the artists featured are Fela, King Sunny Ade, Manu Dibango, Ali Farka Toure, Baaba Maal with Mansour Seck, Miriam Makeba, and the Mahotella Queens.
Wednesday, October 9
Global Village marks birthdays of several artists who brought together world and jazz influences in their work – South African pianist and 2019 NEA Jazz Master Abdullah Ibrahim, vibes and marimba player Dave Samuels, flutist Yusef Lateef, and father and son Cuban pianists Bebo and Chuco Valdes. Plus some Turkish psychedelic rock and flamenco jazz from Germany, and a new World Jazz compilation from Rough Guide.
Thursday, October 10
In conjunction with the October Turkish Psychedelic Folk Rock feature, Global Village goes all day-glo with a program devoted to psychedelic sounds from around the world. We’ll hear Latin, Turkish and Asian psychedelic sounds from the likes of Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers, Mexico’s Sonido Gallo Negro, Afrosound from Colombia, Turkey’s groundbreaking psychedelic group Mo?ollar and contemporary Turkish psychedelic compilation Saz Power, and two guitarists inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Vietnamese guitarist Nguyen Le and Indian guitarist Prasanna.

Global Village celebrates Pulaski Memorial Day to honor the Polish Revolutionary War hero Casimir Pulaski and Polish Americans. The program highlights a wide array of contemporary Polish bands ranging from traditional and avant-folk, to African, klezmer and jazz influenced groups. Plus such American artists as Polka King Frankie Yankovic, punk polka pioneers Brave Combo, and U.S. based Polish world-jazz singer Grazyna Auguscik – along with a polka classic from Berlin’s 17 Hippies. Artists featured include Warsaw Afrobeat Orchestra, Maria Pomianowska & Groupe Gainde, Janusz Prusinowski Trio, Kapela Maliszow, Tegie Chlopy, Motion Trio and Jarek Bester.
