Night Train marks the centennial birthday of producer, concert presenter, manager and activist Norman Granz. We’ll hear music from the Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts he presented, and some of the classic recordings he produced, including the groundbreaking Songbook sets from Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson, and other selections from his Verve and Pablo labels. Plus a special focusing on his legendary Verve label in hour two.

Night Train marks birthdays of pianist Marcus Roberts, seven-string guitar pioneer George Van Eps, and legendary hornman Rahsaan Roland Kirk (including a special about him in hour two of the show). Plus music from Arnett Cobb, one of the artists with a centennial birthday featured on Night Train this month.

Wednesday 8.8.18

Night Train marks the birthday of saxophonist, composer, arranger and bandleader Benny Carter with music he did as a leader (including one with August featured artist Jimmy Rowles) and covers of his classics from Marian McPartland and Diana Krall. Plus new music from Amy Cervini, George Cotsirilos, Antonio Adolfo and Erik Applegate, and a special in hour two focusing on the later careers of Duke Ellington and Benny Carter.

Thursday 8.9.18

Birthday salutes tonight on the Night Train for drummer Jack DeJohnette (including a special in hour two) and pianist Robert Piket. More music for the August Four Centennials feature, this time from pianist Jimmy Rowles, a tribute to Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko who passed away last week, and new music from New Faces, and Monika Herzig’s Sheroes.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
