Lawyers will work with older adults who want to designate a durable power of attorney at an event on Tuesday in Wichita.
The event, targeting individuals 60 and older, will offer the opportunity to appoint someone as a durable power of attorney to handle their affairs if they become incapacitated.
Lawyers from Kansas Legal Services, a non-profit law firm and community education organization, will assist with the effort. Melody McCray-Miller, who’s coordinating the event says it’s important to have legal documents completed.
“It just eases the stress and makes it really clear that there’s a dependable person that has been decided on to make these very, very important decisions,” McCray-Miller says.
Without a power of attorney, a family member might have to go through court proceedings to appoint someone to make decisions.
McCray-Miller anticipates it will take about 15 minutes per individual with lawyers on site to complete the paperwork.
The power of attorney document is valid up until a person dies.
The free event is Tuesday at Grant Chapel AME Church , 2750 N. Hillside in Wichita from 4-6 p.m.
