Next Best Thing: Fall Film Fest Season

For me, and thousands of others, fall in Wichita means it’s time for the Tallgrass Film Festival.

Yes, it’s a bummer that this year’s festival must be held virtually. But not much, if anything, is business as usual now, and we just have to make the best of it.

Take the upsides of virtual Tallgrass: This year it’s twice as long, and the TALLPass will get you access to all the movies on your own schedule. In years past, no matter how hard I tried, I could never make it to all the films on my list. This year, I’ve got a real shot at it.

The 10-day 2020 Tallgrass Film Festival is October 16-25. More information is at tallgrassfilm.org.

There you’ll also find information about the upcoming Take 36 film competition.

With COVID-19 safety guidelines in place, teams will race to create a short film over the course of one weekend, Friday, Aug. 21, through Sunday, Aug. 23. A virtual showcase of the top submissions will stream that Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. on the Tallgrass Virtual Festival App.

And there are even more virtual film events on the horizon.

Next week, Aug. 12 through 16, is rePRO by mama.film. The five-day virtual festival highlights films and shorts that explore themes of women’s health and reproductive rights. It includes five feature films, 20 shorts, and Call-to-Action conversations hosted on Zoom.

Tickets for each film are available on a sliding scale, with all revenue benefiting reproductive justice organizations. You can find out more at repromamafilm.org.
