New Month/New Music – New Blues Releases + Remembering Dr. John

June 7/9

It’s “New Month/New Music” time as Crossroads teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency at the beginning of every month to feature the best in new blues releases. There’s new music this time from:

  • Veteran blues rock band Savoy Brown
  • Blues rocker Kenny Wayne Shepherd
  • Roots and blues rockers, the 44s
  • Veteran Florida soul blues artist Grady Champion
  • Chicago storyteller, blues educator and acoustic blues master Fruteland Jackson
  • Roots rock and blues artist and former member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jimmie Vaughan

In hour two of the show this time, however, Crossroads offers a rebroadcast of a previous birthday salute to Dr. John, featuring music he did under his own name and guest appearances he made with Irma Thomas, B.B. King, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, and more. Dr. John passed away Thursday, June 6, at the age of 77.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
