New Group Works To Help Wichitans Fleeing Domestic Violence

A new group called Guardian Angels is assisting Wichitans affected by domestic violence.

Last year the Wichita Family Crisis Center served nearly 1300 individuals who were fleeing domestic violence situations. That's up by nearly 250 individuals from the previous year, and the center says 2017 numbers are also on the rise.

Guardian Angels was formed after members noticed the importance of helping the crisis center collect items for the people it serves. Executive director Angela Lampe says the center provides victims with clothing and other necessities, including personal care items and all of their food while they're staying at the center.

"Maybe we're also helping them to obtain a copy of their driver’s license [or] birth certificates because they’ve had to leave all of those items at home when they are escaping violence," she says.

Lampe says the center is grateful for the nearly 40 Guardian Angels who work diligently to help women and men in need.
