Leaders from around the city spoke out Tuesday afternoon about three shootings that left four people dead in the past few days.
All of the shootings took place in northeast Wichita between Saturday morning and late Monday, including a Wichita State student killed in the parking lot of a dorm on the WSU campus. Three people were killed in two separate shootings Monday afternoon.
During the press conference, members of the Greater Wichita Ministerial League, along with a representative from the NAACP, said they want to work together to stop the violence in the community.
“What we’re experiencing now is nothing new, it’s just becoming more prevalent," said Pastor T. Lamont Holder of Calvary Baptist Church.
Holder described the shootings as senseless acts committed by people living in the margins of life.
“And when it hits and strikes home it has a tendency of awakening people to this reality," he said.
Over the next few weeks, the group will be meeting to design a plan to address the job crisis, educational disparities and other issues within the African-American community.
