My Arts Wish List for 2018 | An Artist's Perspective

It’s now 2018! Happy New Year! I’d like to share my Arts Wish List for 2018 with you, so here it goes:

  1. Let’s build arches over Douglas on both sides of the Douglas Design District. This will certainly highlight this growing area. And let’s be novel and allow a local sculptor to design it.
  2. Let the City purchase an outdoor sculpture by an internationally known artist like Anish Kapoor. Place the work outside Century II and start the controversy!
  3. Help the KETCH program form a professional art studio and sales gallery for artists with developmental, mental, and physical disabilities. Have solo openings and group shows on a regular basis. Use The Creative Growth Center in Oakland, California as a model. That program is fabulous!
  4. PLEASE relocate the unseen Harry Bertoia sculpture “Interrupted Flight” currently hidden in A. Price Woodard Park to its rightful place at the WAM art garden. This work is a prime example of a great artist’s work and it’s simply LOST in its current location.
  5. Speaking of WAM, please continue to feature local artists in exhibitions. The shows in 2017 were quite popular and very exciting. I think these shows also boost WAM’s younger viewer attendances.
  6. Let’s continue to find ways to artistically use dead space in the downtown area. The ICT Urban Pop Up Park and the newer Gallery Alley on Douglas are prime examples of how to turn a dilapidated area into an exciting gathering spot. And I would love to see local artists utilize these spaces for one night exhibitions. Pop-up exhibits like that are easy and a blast for everybody! They bring back ‘90’s yesteryear and are always a vibrant shot in the arm.

Have your own ideas? Let’s see what we can make happen in 2018.
