Max Abood is a Wichita-based musician who holds a degree in music performance from Friends University. He is part of a musical family that includes his father, Peter Abood, a pianist, and his brother, Bryce, who plays drums with Carrie Nation and The Speakeasy.
Max Abood performs with a variety of bands, including Circular Reference, Revisionist (in which he plays bass) and Old News (in which he plays drums).
“The drummer is definitely the backbone of the band. Your band is only as good as your drummer. A big part of drumming is keeping time, making sure all the band members are right there with me, doing their part and that nobody gets lost.
Bass players and drummers go hand-in-hand. They’re rhythmic brothers. If the drummer falls apart, man, you’re kind of done for. [Laughs.] You’ve got to make sure that you’re always listening and reacting to what others are doing. You have to always be aware of your surroundings.
Not only is it important to keep everybody on time but also to direct dynamic cues for certain sections for the song. Say that the verse is quiet and the first chorus is pretty loud, it’s up to the drummer to build that up and make sure that everybody’s ready for that big dynamic change.”
