A Musical Life: Jim Vegas

Influenced by blues, jazz, and all things American music, Jim Vegas has lived in Boston (where he attended Berklee College of Music), Chicago, Fort Collins, Colorado, Los Angeles, and now Wichita. His wide range of influences and experiences can be heard via his songs, including those found on his latest release, The Bullfight in Our Heads.

On his song, “The Dream Thief”:

“I used to live in L.A. and there was a place in Chinatown that used to have a lot of music. One night, after going to see a band… it was about two o’ clock in the morning. In the middle of this courtyard there was a gigantic water fountain that people used to throw coins in all day long and, I suppose, make their wishes.

And there was this city municipal guy and he had this bag and was just shoveling money out of this fountain. As I was watching that I found it really disturbing, the idea that this guy was stealing everyone’s dreams that they had entrusted to this fountain.

As he was taking the money I started thinking, ‘I wonder who he works for? I wonder where that money goes.’ And if any of these peoples’ dreams have any chance of coming true now that he’s stolen their money from the fountain.”
