A Musical Life: Doug Horacio Holguin Lynn

Doug Horacio Holguin Lynn is a member of Church Tiller, Dougie Jones & The Sonny Jims, Tasteful Nudes and The Goddamn General Public.

“I would say my first musical inclination—to me it’s the funniest thing—my first dream—and it was all I wanted, musically—I was in middle school, seventh or eighth grade, my dream was to be a singer in a Clash cover band. That’s all I ever wanted out of music. I never expected to do all the stuff I’ve done at this point.

I always shoot for simplicity. Sometimes it doesn’t come out that way. I’ll think that I have this song that’s just two parts. I’ll show it to my band and they’ll say, ‘No, that’s like ABCDABCABE.’ To me, it was nothing because I’m using the same chords. Sometimes I don’t realize how much I am doing.

Truly, one of my drummer friends was watching me do loop stuff on guitar and said, ‘You messed up that third triplet.’ I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ It’s like when I was a kid in English [class]. I was using all these things that I didn’t know the name of. I was really good with grammar and I didn’t know why. It just comes from reading. [Laughs.] Just read books and you’ll know how a sentence is supposed to go. It’s what I discovered with music too. If you listen to a bunch of stuff you can kind of discover how you can make music that you want to hear. You can try to be a little bit like the bands that you listen to.”
