Global Village marks the birthday of classical guitarist John Williams with world projects he did featuring music of Africa, Japan, and Venezuela. It is also the birthday of the late Collin Walcott, who was a member of the Paul Winter Consort and then a cofounder of the world chamber jazz ensemble Oregon.
And along with music from Oregon, Global Village highlights more world jazz sounds for the April Jazz Appreciation Month feature from Ernest Ranglin, and the new album from Mariah Parker’s Indo Latin Jazz.
Tuesday, April 25
Global Village highlights music from and inspired by Turkey – including selections from the Istanbul Oriental Ensemble, the folkloric group Karde? Türküler; U.S.-based Turkish artist Omar Faruk Tekbilek; Kansas City-based world jazz group Alaturka; and some ‘70s Turkish psychedelic rock from Edip Akbayram.

As part of the Global Village Jazz Appreciation Month/World Jazz feature, this show explores the varied sounds of Nordic Jazz – including the pioneering work of Jan Garbarek, emerging bands like the Sun Trio, the distinctive sax and goat horn folk jazz of Karl Seglem, groups that incorporate Brazilian influences such as Nordic Choro and Jukka Eskola’s Orquesta Bossa, and Eurojazz players Terje Rypdal, E.S.T. and Arild Anderson.

Global Village has some fun with classic and contemporary exotica from Martin Denny, Don Tiki, Mr. Ho’s Orchestrotica, Joey Altruda, and ‘Mambo King’ Perez Prado. And there’s music for the Jazz Appreciation Month world jazz feature from Latin Jazz percussionist Candido, jazz-inspired ska great Tommy McCook, and Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander.

Global Village wraps up the April Jazz Appreciation Month World Jazz feature with music from several artists born on this date who brought together world and jazz influences in their work – Latin jazz guitarist Steve Khan, African-inspired guitarist Leni Stern, pioneer of Latin Jazz Mario Bauza, and trombonist and salsa pioneer Willie Colon.
