Music Of Japan, Giving Tuesday, Indian Fusion, Disney World & New Month/New Music – Holiday Edition

Monday, December 2

Global Village pays a visit to Japan. Among the highlights in this special show: a composition from Japan’s “Beethoven of the Koto” that is considered akin to the national melody of the country, traditional music from the internationally acclaimed composer and multi-instrumentalist Joji Hirota, ‘70s fusions from Stomu Yamashata’s Red Buddha Theater and Osamu Kitajima, traditional and contemporary Okinawan music from the Rinken Band, Shoukichi Kina, and the Surf Champlers (with a wild version of the James Bond Theme), and a project from Kengo Saito that brings together music of Japan and Afghanistan.

Tuesday, December 3

It’s Giving Tuesday and Global Village devotes the entire show to songs in the spirit of the day. We’ll hear selections from the Playing for Change series, The Same Heart soundtrack, Bob Marley, Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band, and more. Started in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation, Giving Tuesday hopes to encourage charitable donations in the spirit of the holiday season.

Wednesday, December 4

Global Village devotes the show this time to Indo-jazz fusion – from the pioneering work of Joe Harriott and John Mayer, to the popular sounds of Shakti with John McLaughlin, contemporary efforts from the Taal Tantra Experience and Sameer Guptu, and some fusions with other influences from L. Subramaniam and Trilok Gurtu.

Thursday, December 5

Global Village celebrates the birthday of pioneering film animator Walt Disney with a visit to ‘Disney World’ – a program devoted to world, jazz, and other unusual versions of what have become iconic songs from such Disney films as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Lady and the Tramp, and other classics. We’ll hear unique versions of those songs from the likes of Los Lobos, Miles Davis, Buster Poindexter, Tom Waits, Peggy Lee and more.

Friday, December 6

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of recently released and forthcoming world music albums. Among the highlights this time:

  • World music influenced new holiday releases from Los Lobos, the Paul Winter Consort’s Winter Solstice celebrations, and others
  • New African releases from Ghana’s Pat Thomas and Gyedu Blay Ambolley, and Mali’s Mamadou Kelly
  • The latest from Turkey’s Baba Zula
  • And some fascinating Balkan sounds by way of the Bayou from Louisiana’s Blato Zlato
