Monday, September 23

Global Village welcomes in the first day of Fall with songs of the season from a wide array of artists and styles of music. We’ll hear selections from Astor Piazzolla, Bob Dorough, Ralph Towner (with and without the group Oregon), the Zombies, Ahmad Jamal, and more. Night Train also has a fall special tonight, 10 p.m. to midnight.

Tuesday, September 24

Global Village marks the birthday of “Mr. Bongo” – Latin and Latin jazz percussionist Jack Costanzo. And as the September Cuban music feature continues, there are selections from Willy Chirino’s Afro-Cuban Beatles tribute, the Cuban doo-wop group Los Zafiros, and percussion master Mongo Santamaria. Plus the latest from Eljuri, Tiken Jah Fakoly, and the Alma Afrobeat Ensemble.

Wednesday, September 25

In conjunction with the Global Village September Music of Cuba feature, it’s an Africa-Latin show, highlighting some fascinating connections between African and Afro-Cuban music and musicians. We’ll hear selections from the East Africa compilation Urgent Jumping, Cameroon’s Richard Bona from the first project he did with an Afro-Cuban band, Angolan artist Ricardo Lemvo and his Latin group Makina Loca, Congolese Rumba and Soukous stars Wendo Kolosoy, Kanda Bongo Man and Kekele, Senegal’s Orchestra Baobab, and the meeting of African and Latin musicians in the group Africando.

Thursday, September 26

Global Village marks birthdays of Cesar Rosas (Los Lobos, Los Super Seven) and Brazilian singer Gal Costa; continues the Cuban music feature with Adonis Puentes (this month’s Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival series featured artist), his twin brother Alex Cuba (with special guest Omara Portuondo from the Buena Vista Social Club) and guitarist Manuel Galban (another Buena Vista member); and highlights new music from the Red Gold Green & Blue ‘reggae meets the blues’ all-star album, Colombian group Cimarron, Santana, and Peruvian chicha pioneers Los Wembler’s de Iquitos.

Friday, September 27

Global Village celebrates the birthday of Robbie Shakespeare, bassist and half of the legendary Jamaican ‘Riddim Twins’ with Sly Dunbar. We’ll hear recordings the duo did together, along with guest appearances they made with Grace Jones, Black Uhuru, Burning Spear, Monty Alexander, Barry Reynolds and more in this special edition of the show.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
