Night Train steps aside for “Face the Music and Vote: An American Routes 2020 Election Special.” The show features jazz and gospel takes on American anthems, civil rights songs, topical blues and soul treatments and more. Artists range from Nina Simone and Defeayo Marsalis, to Willie Nelson, Sunnyland Slim, Randy Newman, the Staple Singers, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, John Legend and The Roots, Los Lobos, and many more.
Tuesday, November 3
It’s a soul jazz extravaganza tonight on the Night Train – including music from saxophonists Gene Ammons and Stanley Turrentine, organists Shirley Scott, Jimmy Smith, Tony Monaco, and Pat Bianchi, and soul jazz bands like the Chicago Soul Jazz Collective, JV’s Boogaloo Squad, and the Soul Message Band.
Wednesday, November 4
Night Train highlights music from one of November featured artist Mose Allison’s finest later album and going back to his debut as a leader with the instrumental set Back Country Suite. We also mark birthdays of legendary Latin jazz percussionist Carlos “Patato” Valdes, pianist Ralph Sutton, and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt – and among the new music tonight there are selections from Dave Stryker, the John Santos Sextet, the Alan Broadbent Trio, Billy Childs, and Conrad Herwig.
Thursday, November 5
Night Train highlights that rare jazz bird – the male jazz vocalist – tonight. We’ll hear both classic and contemporary singers, including November featured artist Mose Allison, Johnny Hartman, Andy Bey, Kurt Elling, Gregory Porter, Fats Waller and more. Plus new music from trumpeter Carl Saunders, the Flying Horse Big Band tribute to Ray Charles, Brazilian keyboardist Ricardo Bacelar, and the Christian McBride Big Band tribute to Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery.
