More Than 1,000 Rally At KS Statehouse Against Abortion

Stephen Koranda

More than 1,000 anti-abortion advocates gathered at the Statehouse to mark the anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling that made abortion legal in the country. The event is one of the largest yearly rallies held on the capitol grounds.

Speakers at the event noted that this year is the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. Gov. Sam Brownback urged the crowd to keep fighting for the cause.

“Keep pushing for life," he said. "Life is critical, life is essential, life is what it’s all about. And that’s why we need you here and we need you to continue to push and to march and the pray and to work at pro-life centers and to help people to see that this is life.”

Kathy Ostrowski, with the group Kansans for Life, says they’ll pursue some bills that didn’t pass both chambers last session, and they’ll push for changing the way judges are selected. But they won’t pursue a large-scale ban on abortion.

“We think that our strategy of working incrementally, with logical laws that all people can embrace, no matter what side they’re on , is working the best,” she said.

Ostrowski is likely being optimistic with the idea that all sides will embrace the proposals. But, with conservatives now in control of both chambers, many lawmakers will probably support the ideas.
