Monday, May 11

Night Train marks birthdays of Carla Bley (including a special in hour two) and legendary composer Irving Berlin (including a rarity of his performed by May featured artist Peggy Lee). We’ll also hear our other featured artist, John Lewis, with the Modern Jazz Quartet, along with music from the Pacific Mambo Orchestra, the Big Band of Brothers (salute to the Allman Brothers Band) and Erroll Garner.

Tuesday, May 12

Night Train continues the May feature celebrating centennial birthdays of Peggy Lee (with several of her early hits this time) and John Lewis (with the Modern Jazz Quartet and from one of his soundtrack scores). It’s also the birthday of bassist Gary Peacock (in the ‘Standards Trio’ with Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette) and pianist Gerry Wiggins (with MJQ member Milt Jackson and as part of the critically acclaimed Maybeck Recital Hall Series). And there’s new releases this time from the Bill Cunliffe Trio, Andrea Brachfeld, Jim Snidero and more.

Wednesday, May 13

Night Train highlights some jazz covers of Stevie Wonder classics for his birthday. It is also the birthday of two artists associated with Miles Davis – pianist Red Garland and composer and arranger Gil Evans (featured in a Jazz Profiles special in hour two of the show). Plus more music from May featured artists Peggy Lee and John Lewis (with the Modern Jazz Quartet) and the latest releases from Idle Hands, Works for Me, and the Erik Jekabson Sextet.

Thursday, May 14

Night Train continues the May feature with music from singer Peggy Lee (an early hit with Benny Goodman, and her classic Black Coffee album) and pianist and composer John Lewis (from one of his solo recordings). It’s also the birthday of jazz and soprano saxophone pioneer Sidney Bechet (featured in a Jazz Profiles special in hour two) and saxophonist Virginia Mayhew. Plus new music from Hot Club-inspired Pearl Django. John DiMartino’s tribute to Billy Strayhorn, and the Crescent City sounds of Delfeayo Marsalis with the Uptown Jazz Orchestra.
