Global Village marks the birthday of Portugese fado star Mariza, highlights some holiday sounds from Bela Fleck & the Flecktones and from the new Paul Winter Consort Winter Solstice concerts compilation, and new titles from Belgian oud player Tristan Driessens, Canadian guitarist Adrian Raso, and Korean group Black String.

Tuesday, December 17

Music this time in the Global Village from Art Neville (with the Neville Brothers, Wild Tchoupitoulas and the Meters), Brazilian guitarist Carlos Barbosa-Lima, and Carlton Barrett (drummer with the Wailers), all born on this day. We’ll also hear new releases from Ghanaian modern highlife artist Pat Thomas, modern Malian sounds from Invisible System, roots reggae veteran and former member of the Gladiators Clinton Fearon, and the new holiday album from Los Lobos.

Wednesday, December 18

Global Village heads to Cape Verde for music from legendary singer Cesaria Evora, popular band Simentera, and a new compilation of classic Cape Verdean funana music. We’ll also hear the latest from Canadian songwriter and guitarist Bruce Cockburn and veteran reggae band Third World.

Thursday, December 19

Global Village marks birthdays of the father of Ethiojazz Mulatu Astatke, and also of Crescent City piano great Professor Longhair. We’ll also hear the latest from Japan’s Minyo Crusaders, Los Lobos’ new holiday album, and selections from the Paul Winter Consort’s long-running solstice concerts featuring musicians from around the world.

Friday, December 20

This time in the Global Village, it’s music from China. We’ll hear musicians from China, and those who call America and other parts of the world home but play Chinese-influenced music, from traditional to contemporary styles, along with some cross-cultural collaborations. Among the artists featured are U.S. based musicians and educators Gao Hong (with Syrian oud player Issam Rafea) and Mei Han (doing a piece inspired by Balkan and klezmer music), Chinese erhu player Guo Gan with Ivorian balafon player Aly Keita, the Shanghai Restoration Project’s reworking of Chinese Jazz Age favorites, Taiwanese group A Moving Sound, and the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York, one of the oldest traditional Chinese music groups in the U.S.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
