Lester "Prez" Young, and Bossa Nova - The Brazilian Style

Monday 2.17.14

PRESIDENTS’ DAY SPECIAL: Tonight, we team up with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate Presidents’ Day. Night Train will feature music from Lester “Prez” Young (including tracks he did with Billie Holiday, who gave him the nickname of Prez), from Dizzy Gillespie (who ran for president in 1964) and related ‘presidential’ musical offerings. We also kick off a week of music from the stellar lineup of Bobby Watson’s Horizon, who headline the Friends University Jazz Festival this weekend, and continue with more in the February Beatle jazz feature – this time with covers from Shirley Horn, Brad Mehldau, Marian McPartland and Wes Montgomery.

Tuesday 2.18.14

Tonight, the Night Train travels to Brazil for music from pianist and composer Antonio Adolfo; music of Jobim by pianist Joanne Brackeen; Brazilian singer Luciana Souza; a jazz standard, 'Brazilian Style', from singer Diana Krall; a classic album from the bossa nova era by Coleman Hawkins; a later album from Stan Getz, the man who helped introduce bossa nova to America; and Philippe Baden Powell, son of the acclaimed Brazilian guitarist and composer Baden Powell.

Wednesday 2.19.14

Night Train celebrates the birthday of tenor sax and bass clarinet player David Murray with music from his own projects as leader, with the World Saxophone Quartet, and as a special guest with James Carter. Plus, more in the February Beatlejazz feature – this time including Fab Four covers from the Wolff & Clark Expedition, Nina Simone and more – and the latest from Jane Ira Bloom, Catherine Russell and Bobby Watson & the I Have A Dream Project.

Thursday 2.20.14

Night Train marks birthdays of soul jazz organist Charles Kynard and trumpeter Lew Soloff, highlights more music from Bobby Watson & Horizon (who headlight Saturday at the Friends University Jazz Festival), features more jazz covers of Beatles tunes for the February feature, and explores a new Haitian jazz project from Jacques Schwarz-Bart, along with the latest from trombonist Steve Davis and pianist Harold Mabern.
