Labor Day Specials, 90th Birthday Feature & Bireli Lagrene, Dave Liebman & Claire Martin

Monday, September 3
Night Train steps aside for two special programs celebrating Labor Day with jazz and popular songs devoted to work and workers.

Tuesday, September 4
Night Train kicks off the September feature – for the 9th month, 90th birthday celebrations for saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, pianist and composer Horace Silver, and saxophonist and bandleader Frank Foster. Also birthday salutes tonight for soul jazz organist Gene Ludwig, composer, arranger and bandleader Gerald Wilson, saxophonist Dave Liebman, and contemporary gypsy jazz guitarist Bireli Lagrene – plus a gypsy jazz special in hour two of the show.

Wednesday, September 5
The focus tonight on the Night Train is on hard bop, the bluesy and more earthy style of jazz that evolved after bebop. We’ll hear performances and compositions from such hard bop masters as Cannonball Adderley and Horace Silver (our September featured artists), as well as Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Duke Pearson and Bobby Timmons. Plus new releases from the Cory Weeds Little Big Band, the Verve Jazz Ensemble, Jason Marsalis, Ben Paterson, and Allan Harris.

Thursday, September 6
Night Train marks the birthday of British singer Claire Martin and continues the September birthday feature for Horace Silver, Frank Foster and Cannonball Adderley (including a special in hour two about the classic album, Kind of Blue, which featured Adderley as part of the lineup.) Plus the latest from the Brad Mehldau Trio, Freddy Cole, Eddie Daniels and George Kahn.
