Labor Day, Music of Mali, Remembering Randy Weston & New Month/New Music Time

Monday, September 3

We are working on this Labor Day here in the Global Village! Join us for some great songs about work and working from a wide array of artists and in a wide array of styles. Among the artists featured: Tom Waits, Toots Hibbert, the Strawbs, Abbey Lincoln, the Roches, Jimmy Reed and more.

Tuesday, September 4

Global Village kicks off the September Music of Mali feature with contemporary duo Djeneba et Fousco and Tuareg group Terakaft, and celebrates the birthday of gypsy jazz guitarist Bireli Lagrene. Plus new music from Riccardo Tesi & Banditaliana, Mike Marshall & Caterina Lichtenberg, and another of the Nighthawk reggae reissues, this time from Justin Hinds.

(Night Train also features music from Lagrene tonight.)

Wednesday, September 5

A special edition of Global Village in tribute to the great pianist Randy Weston, who passed away on September 1st at the age of 92. Weston was a pioneer in bringing attention to the African roots of American jazz and his distinctive style was a deep fusion of jazz and African influences. We’ll hear music from his groundbreaking 1960 album Uhuru Afrika, the classic two-disc set The Spirits of Our Ancestors, and his Grammy-nominated release Tanjah. We’ll also hear covers of several of his compositions that have become standards from John Renbourn, Mark Whitfield and Ray Barretto.

Thursday, September 6

This time in the Global Village we head a bit north and west of our featured country of Mali for some contemporary releases from and inspired by the Middle East and North Africa. Highlights include French guitarist and composer Titi Robin, Iranian singer (and former Axiom of Choice member) Mamek Khadem, Paris-based world-fusion artist Aziz Sahmaoui,  the Dutch ‘Arabicana’ band NO Blues, Iranian vocalist Mahsa Vahdat with soul and gospel singer Mighty Sam McClain, Israeli percussionist Zohar Fresco, and even some heavy metal from the Arabic Rock Orchestra.

Friday. September 7

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of recently released and forthcoming world music albums.  Among the highlights this time:

The remastered debut album from the Afro Cuban All Stars featuring members of the Buena Vista Social Club

Early Latin-soul tracks from the father of Ethiojazz, Mulatu Astatke

The latest from Latin jazz powerhouse Eddie Palmieri

Haitian roots and blues rock from Moonlight Benjamin

Music inspired by the sounds of Guadaloupe, the Caribbean and the Crescent City from Paris-based Delgres

And some fantastic, funky and rare sounds from a popular ‘80s group from Somalia, the Dur-Dur Band.
