Labor Day, Classical Meets Jazz & Guitarists Peter Bernstein & Bireli Lagrene

Happy Labor Day! Night Train celebrates in the first hour with some jazz work songs, along with music from Horace Silver, Clifford Jordan, Laurindo Almeida, and Sherrie Maricle of the Diva Jazz Orchestra, all born on this date. Then in hour two, it’s a Labor Day Special featuring jazz and work songs from such greats as Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck and more.

Tuesday 9.3.19

Night Train marks the birthday of contemporary guitarist Peter Bernstein. We’ll hear music he did with organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb (from his latest album), Mike LeDonne’s Groover Quartet, and also as a leader. The show also kicks off the September feature celebrating Classical Music Month with chamber jazz and third stream music with music from the Modern Jazz Quartet’s Third Stream Music album, and a Third Stream music special in hour two of the show. Plus new music from pianists Michael Wolff and Yoko Miwa.

Wednesday 9.4.19

Night Train celebrates Classical Music Month throughout September by exploring connections between jazz and classical music, including selections tonight from the Modern Jazz Quartet and Gerald Wilson that were from or inspired by classical composers. We’ll also hear guitarist Bireli Lagrene, saxophonist Dave Liebman, and soul jazz organist Gene Ludwig, all born on this date, and new titles from singer Mary Stallings, pianist Eric Reed, trombonist and Sesame Street musical director Joe Fiedler, the Chicago Soul Jazz Collective, and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.

Thursday 9.5.19

Night Train celebrates Classical Music Month throughout September with a wide array of artists and recordings inspired by both jazz and classical music. Tonight’s show features a number of classical and jazz meetings, including jazz reinterpretations of Debussy, Chopin, Mendelssohn, and Bach, and jazz artists performing with classical ensembles. Among the artists featured are Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea with the Harlem String Quartet, Paquito D’Rivera with Quinteto Cimarron, Art Tatum and Cyrus Chestnut.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
