Night Train joins in with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate Bob Dylan’s birthday. We’ll hear jazz covers of Dylan tunes in hour one from Bill Frisell, Abbey Lincoln, Diana Krall, Charles Lloyd & the Marvel, and more. Then in hour two, it’s a special that focuses on Dylan as a lyricist.

Night Train joins in with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate Africa Day, a holiday marked in many places around the world to celebrate African independence and unity. In hour one we’ll hear music from African jazz artists and African inspired works, including Randy Weston’s groundbreaking Uhuru Afrika (a piece with lyrics from Langston Hughes), Dee Dee Bridgewater’s Mali-inspired Red Earth album, Ethio-jazz creator Mulatu Astatke, and oud players Anouar Brahem and Ahmed Abdul-Malik. Then in hour two, it’s a special that showcases South African jazz greats of the ‘60s and ‘70s.
Wednesday, May 26
Night Train marks birthdays of Miles Davis and Peggy Lee. We’ll hear some classic tracks from both in hour one and a special in hour two focused on Davis’s second great quintet. We’ll also continue the May feature with Keith Jarrett and Gary Peacock in the Standards Trio with Jack DeJohnette; and there’s new music from Singaporean pianist Jeremy Monteiro, Asian American bassist Yasushi Nakamura (on Vincent Herring’s new album) and guitarist Doug MacDonald recorded in Hawaii as our Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration continues. We also remember pianist Norman Simmons, who passed away earlier this month.

Night Train wraps up the May feature celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month; marks birthdays of bassist Gary Peacock and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and singer Dee Dee Bridgewater (featured in a special in hour two of the show; and highlights new releases from the Tiptons, Yoko Miwa, and Ray Gallon.
